Homemade Falafel Recipe

Homemade falafel... many prefer not to buy ready-made falafel as long as it's easy to make at home. The important thing is to have a grain grinder available. Falafel is very delicious with vegetables and tarator (tahini sauce).

Homemade falafel... This method relies on making falafel with a large amount of chickpeas and only one cup of fava beans. This way, you get light-colored falafel patties because they won't absorb much oil.

Ingredients

Start here, then move straight into the method.

  • 1 kilo chickpeas
  • 1 cup split or peeled fava beans
  • 1 large dry onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 2 tablespoons falafel spice mix
  • 1 teaspoon dried coriander
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Method

Follow the cooking sequence without leaving the page.

  1. Soak the chickpeas and fava beans in a bowl of water and leave them overnight.
  2. Drain the chickpeas and fava beans, then grind them with the garlic and onion in a falafel grinder (similar to a meat grinder); grind twice until you obtain a smooth mixture.
  3. Add the salt, spices and coriander and mix well until a cohesive, homogeneous dough forms.
  4. Add the sodium bicarbonate to the mixture only 15 minutes before frying and stir well.

  5. Shape the falafel patties using the special mould intended for that.
  6. Place each patty directly from the mould into hot, deep oil and leave them at high temperature until they brown.
  7. Remove the patties from the oil and drain them briefly, then serve with vegetables, peppers and tarator or tahini sauce and hot chili pepper as desired.
