How to Make Kunafa Rolls

An easy, tried-and-true homemade recipe for kunafa rolls. You can prepare this dessert for special occasions to impress your family and guests.

Ingredients

Start here, then move straight into the method.

  • 125 grams kataifi (kunafa) pastry strands
  • 3 teaspoons powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or any nuts, with a pinch of ground cinnamon
  • Filling
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 can qashta (or clotted cream)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 7 tablespoons butter at room temperature (100 grams)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • Preparing the filling
  • In a saucepan, combine the milk and sugar and whisk by hand until the sugar dissolves.

Method

Follow the cooking sequence without leaving the page.

  1. Pulse the kunafa strands in a food processor to a medium coarseness
  2. Place the kunafa strands in a nonstick pan, pour the melted butter over them and rub with your fingers so they absorb the butter well
  3. Cook the kunafa strands over medium heat, stirring with a wooden spoon until they take a light blond color
  4. Add the powdered sugar over them while continuing to stir
  5. Turn off the heat and immediately spread the kunafa strands in a rectangular 30 cm baking pan, pressing them down well without leaving gaps
  6. Add the flour and continue stirring, then add the ashta (clotted cream) on top
  7. Put the mixture over the heat, stirring continuously until it thickens
  8. Turn off the heat under it, then add the butter and vanilla and stir until the butter melts
  9. Spread the muhallebi or the filling over the kunafa so it covers it completely
  10. Chill it in the refrigerator for no less than 5 hours
    Timers: 300 min
  11. Cut the muhallebi with a sharp knife lengthwise and widthwise
  12. To obtain 6 pieces
  13. Stuff each piece with walnuts and cinnamon, roll it into a cylinder and place it on the serving plate
  14. Decorate the kunafa rolls with chocolate sauce and ground pistachios
