  • Orange syrup
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 whole orange, unpeeled

  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup orange juice (or milk)
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder

Method

Follow the cooking sequence without leaving the page.

  1. Pour the orange juice through a fine sieve to strain it.
  2. Add the sugar to the strained orange juice.
  3. Add the lemon juice.
  4. Place the mixture over low heat until it comes to a boil.
  5. Slice the whole orange (without peeling) into rounds and add them on top of the orange syrup.
  6. Let the mixture boil for about 3 minutes, then turn off the heat.

  7. Begin by preparing the caramel. Put the sugar in a non-stick pan and add the water without stirring.
  8. Gently stir the caramel with a wooden spoon so the mixture doesn’t clump.
  9. Pour the caramel into the cake pan.
  10. Arrange the orange slices (without the syrup) on top of the caramel.
  11. Mix the cake ingredients and pour the batter over the caramel and oranges.
  12. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 40 minutes.

  13. When the cake is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool well; then invert it onto a serving plate to reveal the caramelized orange top.
