Recipe story

Hamisa shrimp — a Gulf recipe made the traditional way. Very tasty and easy.

Ingredients

  • 500 g cleaned shrimp (prawns)
  • 1 dry onion, finely chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 hot pepper (red or green) to taste
  • 1/2 tsp fresh ginger, minced or crushed
  • 1 large tomato, diced
  • 1/2 cup fresh coriander (cilantro), chopped
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp dried coriander
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 tsp curry powder
  • A pinch of black pepper
  • Sesame seeds for garnish

Method

  1. Sauté the onion in a little oil until it begins to brown, then add the garlic, hot pepper and ginger and fry until aromatic. Add the cleaned shrimp and cook until the liquid evaporates.
  2. Add all the spices and stir so the shrimp absorb the flavors.
  3. Add the diced tomato, then the chopped coriander and stir.
  4. Stir in the tomato paste as well.
  5. Let the hamisa simmer for just five minutes, then remove from the heat and add a squeeze of lemon, stirring once more.
  6. Garnish with sesame seeds and serve hot with rice, or enjoy with Arabic bread.
