Ingredients

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon yeast
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 250 g butter
  • A pinch of salt
  • Syrup (qater/shira)

Method

  1. Beat the eggs with the vanilla, then add the sugar and butter. Gradually add the flour and dry ingredients. Pour in the milk slowly and knead the mixture well.
  2. Let the dough rest and rise for 1 hour.
    Timers: 60 min
  3. Prepare the syrup in the meantime: put 2 cups sugar with 1 cup water; when the mixture boils, add 1 tablespoon orange blossom water and 1 tablespoon rose water plus 1 tablespoon lemon juice.
  4. Set the syrup aside.
  5. When the dough has rested, roll it out, cut into ropes, then braid them as shown in the accompanying photos.
  6. Fry the braided dough in hot deep oil and dip it in the syrup.
