Recipe story

Eggless donuts — a reliable homemade recipe every time

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 8 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter at room temperature, cut into small pieces
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For more of Najwa's eggless desserts see Chocolate cake without eggs

Method

  1. Place the milk in a medium glass bowl, add the vanilla extract and stir.
  2. Put 1½ cups of the flour into another deep bowl, add the yeast, salt, cornstarch and sugar and mix. Make a well in the center of the flour and add the warm milk mixed with vanilla.
  3. Knead the ingredients well by hand, then add the melted butter and continue kneading until you have a soft dough.
  4. Then add the remaining flour and knead for five minutes.
  5. Grease a deep bowl with a little butter, place the dough in the bowl, cover it well to prevent air from getting in, and leave it in a warm place for one hour until it rises and doubles in size.
  6. Sprinkle some flour on a clean work surface, then roll the dough out to about 1 cm thickness.
  7. Cut the dough using a round cutter or a suitably sized round plate to form the donuts, then cut out the center of each piece using a small cutter to create the hole.
  8. Repeat until all the dough is used.
  9. Cover the donuts well and leave them for 30 minutes until they puff up and rise.
    Timers: 30 min
  10. Heat the oil and fry the eggless donuts until they turn golden.
  11. When cooled, decorate them as desired with Nutella, powdered sugar, or any topping you prefer.
