How to Make Homemade Baklava

Baklava may be rich and luxurious, but it is very easy to prepare. Discover how to make homemade walnut baklava—quicker, easier, and tastier.

Ingredients

Start here, then move straight into the method.

  • 1 package of kataifi pastry or ready-made baklava dough *
  • 2 cups walnuts
  • 1/2 small cup fine semolina
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • A pinch of cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon orange blossom water
  • 1 tablespoon rose water
  • Pistachios, for garnish
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 cups syrup
  • How to make the syrup
  • Dissolve 2 cups of sugar in 1 cup of water, then add 1 tablespoon butter and the juice of half a lemon. Place the mixture in a saucepan over the heat until it boils. Let it boil for 15 minutes, then remove from the heat and add 1 teaspoon rose water and 1 tablespoon orange blossom water.

Method

Follow the cooking sequence without leaving the page.

  1. . Sauté the semolina in a pan with two tablespoons of butter until the semolina takes on a golden color. Add the sugar to the semolina and stir for a few minutes.
  2. Remove the mixture from the heat and let it cool. Add the ground walnuts, cinnamon, orange blossom water, rose water, and 1 tablespoon syrup, and mix well to obtain the baklava filling.
  3. Take half of the kataifi/pastry dough and layer the sheets on top of each other in a baking pan, brushing butter between each layer.
  4. Sprinkle the baklava filling evenly over the pastry, then spread the second half of the kataifi dough over it as you did with the first. Trim the edges of the pastry after brushing them with butter to make cutting easier. Cut the baklava into uniform pieces.
  5. Put the baklava tray in the oven at 180°C for half an hour. When the baklava turns golden, remove it from the oven, pour the syrup over it and decorate with pistachios.
  6. Serve the baklava when it has cooled.
  7. Method for preparing the syrup:
  8. Dissolve 2 cups of sugar in 1 cup of water, add 1 tablespoon of butter and the juice of half a lemon. Put the mixture in a pot over the heat until it boils. Let it boil for 15 minutes, then remove from the heat and add 1 teaspoon rose water and 1 tablespoon orange blossom water.
