Marble cake — a tried-and-true homemade recipe!

Ingredients:

6 eggs, room temperature

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar

1 1/2 cups butter, room temperature

1/2 cup milk

3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

3 tablespoons cocoa powder

a pinch of salt

1 teaspoon vanilla

zest of 1 lemon

Cream the butter with the sugar and vanilla until the mixture is pale and fluffy.
Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
Add the milk and lemon zest, then gradually add the flour, mixing gently with a spatula.
Divide the batter into two portions — they don't have to be equal.
Mix the smaller portion with the cocoa powder and leave the other plain.
Pour the plain batter into the cake pan and spoon the cocoa batter over the center. Using a fork, gently lift and swirl the cocoa batter from the bottom toward the top in the middle of the pan to create the marble effect.
Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 30 minutes, or until the cake is cooked through and has risen — baking time may vary by oven.
It's best not to open the oven at all while the cake is baking.
