Brazilian Sonho (Cream-Filled Doughnuts)

Ingredients

- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon yeast
- A pinch of salt
- 1 egg yolk
- 50 g butter
- 1 cup liquid milk
- Custard (filling)
- 1/2 can sweetened condensed milk (Nestle) or more to taste
- 2 cups liquid milk
- 4 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon vanilla

Method
Follow the cooking sequence without leaving the page.
- Mix the flour, sugar, yeast and salt, then add the remaining ingredients and knead with lukewarm milk until a soft dough forms.
- When the dough becomes soft, let it proof for about 30 minutes in warm weather (longer if needed).Timers: 30 min
- Meanwhile prepare the custard: dissolve the cornstarch in the milk, add the condensed milk, egg yolk and vanilla, mix well and strain.
- Cook the mixture in a saucepan over low heat, stirring continuously, until it thickens.
- Cover the surface of the custard with plastic wrap and allow it to cool completely.
- Roll out the dough thickly, cut into circles, cover and let rest for another 30 minutes (or longer depending on the climate).Timers: 30 min
- Fry the dough in plenty of oil over medium heat (not too hot) so the inside cooks through.
- When the doughnuts and the custard are both cold, fill the doughnuts with custard and serve.
- You can refrigerate the filled sonho so the custard sets firmer.
- Dust with powdered sugar to serve, if desired.
