Red velvet cake — a much-loved cake that’s become very popular. Why not make it at home? Here’s the method.

1 and 1/3 cups flour

1 tablespoon cocoa powder

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup butter at room temperature

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1 egg

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1/2 teaspoon white vinegar

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 cup milk

2 tablespoons red food coloring

1 cup cream cheese (Philadelphia or any cream cheese)

3/4 cup whipping cream (liquid)

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

3/4 cup sifted powdered (icing) sugar

In a bowl, beat the butter and sugar until combined.
Add the egg and vanilla and continue beating, then add the oil and milk while mixing.
In another bowl, sift the flour, baking powder, salt and cocoa powder and mix.
Add the dry mixture to the egg mixture and beat until combined.
Finally add the red food coloring and mix again.
Divide the batter evenly into two 15 cm (approx.) pans lined with parchment paper.
Bake in the oven at 170°C for about 30 minutes.
Prepare the cream filling: in a bowl beat the cream cheese lightly, then add the sifted powdered sugar and beat again.
In another bowl whip the liquid cream until firm, then fold it into the cream cheese mixture gently with a wooden spoon (fold top to bottom so the mixture keeps its air).
After the cakes are baked, let them cool to room temperature. Spread the cream filling on the first layer, then place the second layer on top.
Decorate the top of the red velvet cake with the same cream used for the filling.
Chill the cake in the refrigerator for a sufficient time before serving.
