Recipe story

Petit four is one of the most requested types of cookies. Though originally a French recipe, it has found its way into every home cook’s kitchen for making easy, light desserts at home. Try this successful method.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup butter, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Method

  1. Whisk the butter, sugar, and vanilla well until the sugar dissolves completely.
  2. Add the egg and whisk until combined, then add the flour and baking powder and bring the dough together without kneading.
  3. Note: If you want to shape it using special petit four molds, the dough should be soft. If you want to roll it out and cut it, it is better to add a little more flour so the dough holds together more without becoming hard. You can also add a little more sugar if you want to leave the petit four undecorated later.
  4. Arrange the shaped pieces on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and bake in a preheated oven at 180°C, with heat from the top and bottom. Bake for about 10 to 12 minutes, depending on the oven.
    Timers: 12 min
  5. Let the petit four cool, then decorate as desired with jam and sprinkles, melted chocolate, or anything else.
  6. Note: Do not leave the petit four in the oven for more than 12 minutes at most so it does not become hard. Petit four should not brown; it should stay pale.
    Timers: 12 min
