How to Make Awamat?
Awamat in a wonderful homemade, crispy recipe... Learn to make fried awamat at home instead of buying them ready-made. Frying them in two stages is essential to achieve the desired result.
Deep-fried awamat are one of the tastiest Arab sweets and are also among the most economical. Be warned: they are rich and soaked in syrup, but their sweetness and crunch are enough to ease the guilt :)
Ingredients
Start here, then move straight into the method.
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon dry yeast
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- a pinch of salt
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt at room temperature
- 1 cup warm water
- sugar syrup (qatr or shireh) for dipping the awamat

Method
Follow the cooking sequence without leaving the page.
- Mix all the dry ingredients together.
- Add the yogurt, water, and oil, and knead by hand.
- Let the dough rest for two hours.
- Shape the awamat using a tablespoon.
- Fry them immediately in hot, deep oil—partially fry them in the first stage.
- Remove them from the oil.
- After a short while, fry them a second time.
- Let them drain from the oil, then dip them in cold syrup at room temperature.
- Lift them from the syrup, drain them a little, then serve.
