How to Make Chocolate Basbousa

Ingredients

  • 3 medium eggs or 4 small eggs
  • 1 carton cream (qaymar)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup oil
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon Nescafe
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • a small pinch of salt
  • 1 1/2 cups coarse semolina
  • 1/2 cup shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chocolate syrup
  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk mixed with 1/2 cup water

Method

Follow the cooking sequence without leaving the page.

  1. Beat the eggs with the sugar and vanilla for a little while, then add the carton of cream, cocoa powder, Nescafe, baking powder, salt, and oil, and beat well until the mixture is fully combined.
  2. Add the semolina and coconut and mix to get a thick batter.
  3. Grease a baking tray with a little oil and spread half of the batter in it.
  4. Spread the chocolate syrup lightly and evenly over the batter in the tray.
  5. Take the second half of the batter and add 1/4 cup water to it, then beat well until it becomes spreadable over the chocolate syrup in the tray.
  6. Place the tray in a preheated oven at 180°C on the lower rack and bake for about 15 to 20 minutes.

  7. Turn off the bottom heat and turn on the top heat for 10 minutes.

  8. Remove the tray from the oven after the time has passed and prick holes all over the surface using a fork or a thin skewer.
  9. Two minutes before that, place the condensed milk and water in a saucepan over the heat, mix well, and let it cool slightly.
  10. As soon as the tray comes out of the oven and the holes are made, pour this milk over the entire surface.
  11. Cover the tray with aluminum foil so it absorbs the liquid well.
  12. Decorate the top with chocolate shavings or as desired (optional).
  13. Serve the chocolate basbousa at room temperature.
