Moghli, or karawiya, made at home the traditional way... finished with coconut and nuts! It is usually served for the birth of a new baby, but we can enjoy it with or without an occasion, can't we? :)

Moghli, or karawiya, is one of the tastiest sweets served especially to celebrate the arrival of a new baby. This old tradition is still carried on today, despite the time and effort it takes to prepare this delicious dessert.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups finely ground rice flour (ready-made)
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 14 cups cold water
  • 1 tsp anise powder, optional, or 1/2 cup boiled anise water
  • 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons caraway
  • For topping:
  • Coconut
  • Raisins - optional
  • Almonds
  • Cashews
  • Walnuts

Method

  1. In a cold pot, put the rice, sugar, water, and spices and mix well with a whisk until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is uniform.
  2. Place the mixture in a nonstick pot over medium heat and continue stirring in a circular motion or whisking until it comes to a boil.
  3. When the mixture boils, lower the heat and let the moghli simmer for about two hours until it thickens well, stirring occasionally.
  4. Pour the moghli or karawiya into serving cups and let it cool completely.
  5. Refrigerate until serving.
  6. When serving, garnish with coconut and nuts that have been soaked in cold water for one hour and well drained.
